Recently I've been pondering the all-time best television shows. It's quite a difficult task to attempt to truly come up with a top 10 list while considering every show. I've seen nearly all of the shows that have stood out over the last twenty years or so and I feel like a vast majority of the shows before that pale in comparison to modern shows (or maybe I just can't relate to them as well). Here's my best attempt at the best of TV:
Top 10 Hour-Long Dramas
10. Firefly - Joss Whedon's beloved space opera was far too short-lived, but still deserves a spot on this list. In just half a season Firefly established excellent characters and an intriguing universe.
9. Glee - Although only in its second season, Glee comes in at number nine for essentially creating a new TV genre as pretty much the first musical television series. In addition to some entertaining musical numbers each week, the show has managed to establish compelling characters and story while maintaining its overall tone as a farce.
8. House - This show redefines medical dramas. The true gem of this show though is Gregory House played by Hugh Laurie. Greg House is perhaps the best character on TV and singlehandedly grabs the number eight spot for this show.
7. Chuck - I never thought Chuck would make it on the air this long, but it has proven there's a place for a lighthearted sci-fi spy comedy featuring a nerdy main character. Every week I look forward to watching this show.
6. Alias - Although the storyline petered out in the final seasons, Alias was a powerful show that was near impossible to stop watching. The cliff hangers and unanswered questions held the viewers attention and didn't let go.
5. Battlestar Galactica - Perhaps the most underrated show on this list, Battlestar suffered a bit from being on the Sci-Fi Chanel (now SyFy) and many viewers will not give a space show a chance. Battlestar is much deeper than that and in many episodes is more a show about other things (politics, romance, etc.) that just happens to be set in space.
4. Dexter - Dexter Morgan is probably a close second to Greg House in the most intriguing character category. The show is a perfect glimpse inside the mind of a serial killer and is often an edge of your seat thriller that isn't afraid to shock the viewer.
3. Mad Men - It's difficult to say just why Mad Men is so good. On the surface the story seems shallow, but the characters, especially Don Draper, are deep and it keeps you wanting more.
2. The Sopranos - Another show that kind of lost it in the later seasons, but had great acting, intense story, and a very unique plot.
1. Lost - Maybe Lost isn't my favorite show ever (though it's close), but it's undoubtedly the best show ever made. The character flashbacks allowed Lost to create some of most well-developed characters in TV history. All of the unanswered questions kept viewers coming back every week for more.
