Canon 17-55 EF-S f/2.8 Initial Impressions

Yesterday I replaced my 18-55 mm kit lens with the 17-55 EF-S f/2.8.  Initially, I was dead set on getting the 24-70L f/2.8, but decided that I didn't want to give up the wide end of the focal range.  The only lens that really fit into the range I was looking for was the 17-55, but I was hesitant considering reviews ranged from "only marginally better than the 18-55 kit lens" to "I don't know why this isn't branded as an L lens." Based on this my expectations were low, expecting only to gain the advantage of f/2.8 throughout the zoom range without much difference in overall quality.

So far I've only had a chance to take a few shows around the house, but I can definitely say that anyone claiming this to be equivalent to the kit lens is an idiot.  Simply put, this lens is amazing.  It's sharper, produces better contrast and colors, and is much better in low light (obviously) than the kit lens.  I'll be taking some more photos and videos soon.  In the meantime run, don't walk, to replace your kit lens on your T2i or other Canon EF-S compatible DSLR.
