ryTV - Day by Day Fall Preview

As usual there are a barrel of new shows premiering this fall and a handful of great shows returning.  Here's what I'll be watching this fall:

Monday

Chuck Season 4. Mondays
at 8PM on NBC.
Chuck - Premiers September 20 at 8:00
I'm ecstatic that Chuck is returning for a fourth season.  Honestly I never thought it would make it this far and this could realistically be its last year.  Sure, it's technically not the best show on TV, but it's witty enough to be my favorite show and the only thing to look forward to on a dreaded Monday.  I'm really not sure what to expect from this season or how much story the writers really have left up their sleeves.  Nonetheless, each week never fails to provide a fun story.  My biggest complaint with Chuck is that the "bad guy" organizations, such as Fulcrum and The Ring, have no structure and their endgame never develops throughout the season.  It's always just a bunch of random baddies trying to get their hands on the intersect.  A little rhyme and reason to our favorite protagonist's nemeses could really add depth to the show and keep the story going for another few seasons perhaps.

The Event. NBC Mondays at 9PM.
The Event - Premiers September 20 at 9:00
I'm not sure what to make of this show yet or whether it'll make the cut after the first few episodes.  It looks like it make be a hybrid of a replacement for Heroes and a half-hearted attempt at Lost.  The previews got my attention and I'll give it a go.

Tuesday
Glee Season 2. Tuesdays at 8PM on Fox.
Glee - Premiers September 21 at 8:00
I've only watched one episode of Glee; it was good, but not enough to compel me to watch the first season.  Catching bits and pieces of episodes throughout the year and hearing about different story arcs has made me want to watch the season one DVD prior to the second season premier.  From what I've absorbed one must approach Glee as a farce and not take it too seriously.  I'm looking forward to catching up and watching the only show remotely worth watching on Tuesdays.

Wednesday
Undercovers. NBC Wednesdays at 8 PM.
Undercovers - Premiers September 22 at 8:00
It's J.J. Abrams so you know it'll be good...and weird.  The premise, strikingly similar to the 2005 film Mr. and Mrs. Smith, is simple enough. The show revolves around a married couple who are also spies.  Based on J.J.'s past repertoire I give it three weeks before you can't figure out what's going on and the Cloverfield monster makes an appearance.  All kidding aside, I think and hope this show is going to offer more than meets the eye.

Fringe Season 3. Thursdays at 9PM on Fox
Thursday
Fringe - Premiers September 23 at 9:00
The most intriguing, exciting, and underrated show on television returns for a third season after an epic ending to season two.  Hopefully not too much of the season will revolve around the Olivia switch because there is so much other, and arguably better, story to tell.  This show really hit its stride midseason last year and I think this will continue into season three.

Friday
Supernatural Season 6
on The CW.  Fridays at 9PM.
Supernatural - Premiers September 24 at 9:00

Supernatural continues to be a solid show, but I'm not sure how much originality remains in the stories.  Ratings have remained consistent, and the storyline has managed to stay somewhat exciting, but I really felt in season five that the creative well has run dry.  I predict this will be the final season of Supernatural.

Sunday
Dexter Season 5.  Sundays
 at 9PM on Showtime.
Dexter - Premiers September 26 at 9:00
The final minutes of the season four finale was arguably one of the biggest surprises and saddest moments in television history.  I assume the new season will focus on the woes of a single father trying to find time to be a serial killer.  This is another show, however, that I wonder just how much story is left.  This is a big show for Showtime, so I'm guessing there will be a sixth season.  Dexter is likely the best thing on television so I won't be missing an episode!

The Walking Dead premiers at
10PM on Halloween on AMC.
The Walking Dead - Premiers October 31 at 10:00
For me this is my most anticipated show of the Fall.  Mixing AMC's current run of excellent television with zombies seems to be a match made in heaven.  Even the trailer for the show is excellent.  I've watched it twice and each time it left me wanting more.  Since seeing the trailer I've read the first several comics on which the show is based.  The trailer seems to mimic the comic quite well.  I must say that much of the comic is no all that "action packed," so there is the possibility that after the first episode or so The Walking Dead could become a snoozefest.

Next time on ryTV:  Current shows that have jumped the shark.
