- Over the past decade or so the government has become some sort of moral regulator and seems to focus more on morals than policies a government should focus on. Why has religion become such an important topic in politics in a country founded on the separation of church and state? Why should it matter what religious background a candidate has as long as he can lead our country effectively? There is definitely a political movement (especially among Republicans) to legislate to uphold traditional Christian values. This is not the job of the government. The government is not, and should not be, in the business of morals.
- The government continues to over-regulate everything and continues to take away our freedoms. After being to Europe, it is clear that America is not the freest country in the world. Additionally, this over-regulation is taking away opportunities for small businesses. With all the rules and regulations it is nearly impossible to start a small business which contributes to unemployment and an overall decline in the standard of living for many. In Europe small businesses still exist.
- Some of the reason for the lack of small businesses above is the fact that politicians support big corporations and those with money and regulate in their favor which in turn raises the barriers to entry into a business. Two Examples:
- Not long ago a beautiful 1999 Lincoln Limousine was for sale for $11,000 (it costs over $100,000 brand new). It was in excellent condition and was perfect for someone wanting to take on a weekend limousine service for some additional income. There is a law in Pennsylvania, however, that requires a limousine to be no more than 8 model years old. What reason does this law exist other than to keep the barriers of entry to this business high? There are planes in the sky, buses and taxis on the road, trains on the rails, and ships on the water that are much older than 8 years, so this cannot be a true safety concern. This is a prime example of the government likely catering to a big company with deep pockets.
- It costs more for a permit in many municipalities to operate an ice cream truck than one could possibly make from doing business. Again, this lessens the opportunity for new businesses.
- Politicians must be great orators and have a great stage presence to win. True, but ridiculous. I want someone who is an effective leader, not a theatrical genius. Politicians must have a squeaky clean past by the moral standards of a hardcore Christian. Again, I'd rather have a leader who can lead well with a few minor blemishes on his past than one with a clean (or well covered-up?) past.

Election Day and I'm Not Voting
This really isn't a political blog, but since it's election day, why not? This will be the first major November election in which I haven't voted in quite some time. It's not because I'm too busy, it's because I'm completely fed up with politics. I've realized that all politicians are the same. Why have I grown so tired of politics? Let's take a look:
